Background of Balochistan

Historically, this region was inhabited by independent Baloch tribes. To maintain peace and avoid invasion, in the 12th century, 44 tribes united to form a confederation. The British used the term “Balochistan” to describe this confederation. After independence, the region was annexed into Pakistan in 1948. Since then, there have been several movements and armed struggles in the name of freedom (Independent Balochistan).

The Demand for Freedom

A group called the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) is active in this area and is waging an armed struggle against Pakistan for an independent Balochistan. According to “Asia Pacific Foundation” researcher Osheren Singh, the Pakistani army is responding with severe repression, including murders and torture of youth and tribal leaders.

Rooted in History

Historical treaties suggest that Balochistan was never truly part of Pakistan. A significant portion of Balochistan, including Quetta (then part of Persia), was merged into British India between 1896 and 1905. Before that, regions such as Kalat, Makran, and Lasbela were governed by local rulers under British influence, not directly by the British government.

Cultural Exploitation

Islamabad tried to erase the Baloch identity and culture by suppressing their traditions and forcibly imposing its own ideology. Educational institutions and madrasas were opened to promote a unified national narrative, but this only intensified the feeling of alienation.

Division for Control

Balochistan was administratively divided to control the population. Quetta was turned into a military zone, and the central government retained authority over natural resources, fueling more discontent.

Economic Neglect

Even though Balochistan is rich in natural resources, it remains the most underdeveloped province in Pakistan. Basic amenities are scarce, and infrastructure development is minimal. This economic disparity adds fuel to the demand for independence.
